Band
Academy Band
Academy Band is an exciting class where students learn to play a band instrument. We start right at the very beginning, letting our students select which instrument to learn from between Brass and Woodwinds. All the fundamentals of good tone production and technique, as well as reading and sight-reading music, are taught during Academy Band. For students who already have a year of experience playing an instrument, we offer an intermediate class as well that further challenges and develops our players that have already mastered the beginning techniques. The students in both classes perform at our Band Christmas Concert, as well as our Band Spring Concert each year.
Middle and High School Band
Students in grades 7-12 join to form the Calvary Concert Band as well as the Calvary Marching Knights. During the Fall semester, our band students learn and perform a Marching Show at Half-time during Football Games. We are proud to also support our team, playing stand tunes at our home games as well as traveling to several away games. Our Marching Knights also travel to compete in several Marching Band Competitions across the area. Lastly, the Fall Semester concludes with the Calvary Concert Band performing a Veterans Day concert in November as well as a Christmas Concert in December.
During the Spring Semester, our Calvary Concert Band spends much more time with the development of our playing technique, challenging ourselves with new and exciting concert band literature. Much of the semester is dedicated to preparing for the Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE), which is the state of Georgia's evaluation for all band programs across the state. Calvary first participated in this assessment in 2022, earning a Superior Rating, and again in 2023 earning another Superior Rating. The Spring Semester also allows our students the opportunity to perform as a Jazz Ensemble, which celebrates the uniquely American art form of Jazz. We conclude the year with a Spring Concert and a performance at the Calvary Graduation Ceremony.
While the vast majority of our students in the Middle and High School Band already have experience playing an instrument, we are always welcoming new students who would like to learn. It's never too late to start that lifelong journey of being a musician!
Worship Band
Worship Band is a High School elective class that meets five days a week during the school day, with after-school rehearsal on Wednesday and a Thursday morning soundcheck. This class is designed to be an educational approach to serving and leading through music during Chapel at Calvary.
Students apply and audition to join the class and are expected to have a vibrant personal relationship with Jesus and a heart for serving their peers on and off stage. Students develop and grow in their musical skills, but students need to be proficient with their instrument to participate. The instrumentation and make-up of the class varies from year to year based on enrollment.
