Varsity Volleyball Wins 2nd Place in State

Calvary Christian continued its march toward a second straight
state volleyball title with first- and second-round wins Friday in the Georgia Independent School Association tournament at George Walton Academy.

The Lady Knights swept Mount Vernon Presbyterian 25-10, 25-9, 25-7, then prevailed over Westminster Christian 25-23, 29-31, 25-8, 25-17.

On Saturday the Lady Knights beat Young American Christian academy in the semi finals advancing to the finals. The Lady Knights fell short of their 2nd state Championship title with a loss to Pinecrest Academy in the finals.

They won their semifinal against Young American Christian 25-21, 23-25, 25-10, 25-9. The Lady Knights lost 20-25, 25-18, 28-26, 25-22 to Pinecrest Academy in the Georgia Independent School Association championship match.

Coach Chris Akers said he is proud of his players’ effort, especially because Pinecrest had swept two matches from them during the regular season when one of their outside hitters was sidelined. “They played with reckless abandon, gave everything they had,” he said. “We had every chance to win that match, but we just didn’t get the breaks we needed.”

Leaders (combined for both days): Olivia Whitehurst 52 kills, 45 digs, 9 aces, 3 blocks; Ivey Roper 122 assists, 10 kills, 19 digs, 5 aces; McKenzie Bragg 51 kills, 9 blocks, 4 aces, 4 digs; Caytlin Merritt 52 digs, 10 aces.

Varsity Girls WIN Volleyball Tournament!

The CCS varsity girls volleyball team won the Lady Eagle Volleyball Tournament at Sherwood Academy on October 10,
with a 4-0 record. The Lady Knights beat Ridgecrest 25-5, 25-11, Sherwood 25-7, 25-12 and George Walton 25-7, 25-15, in the
title match.

McKenzie Bragg was the tournament MVP. She joined Ivy Roper and Mary McCarty on the all-tourney team.

Update: 10/16/09

CCS clinched its third straight Region 3 crown with a sweep of Harvester Christian on Thursday to qualify for the GISA state tournament.

Varsity Girls Finish Second in Augusta
Volleyball Tournament
