Posted March 11, 2008

Parents, be aware that many children have been absent from school recently due to various viral infections.

Please DO NOT send your child to school if they are sick. They must be FEVER FREE for 24 hours before returning to school. Also, they must not have vomited or had diarrhea for 24 hours before returning.

Re: MRSA Precautions

A considerable amount of information has been disseminated recently regarding the staph infection known as community acquired-MRSA. Though there have not been any known instances at CCS, we wanted everyone to be aware of the precautions being taken at school.

1. At the school nurse facility, extra precaution is taken regarding antibiotic treatment and covering of skin that is cut, scratched, etc. Also, the nurse is being observant and asking questions related to the common symptoms related to MRSA.

2. The regular cleaning crew is using a disinfectant on common surfaces (door knobs, table tops, counter tops, etc.) in their daily routine.

3. In extended care, the mats used for children’s naps are wiped down with disinfectant regularly.

4. The entire locker rooms (girls and boys) are thoroughly wiped down with a disinfectant solution twice each week. The entire weight room and equipment is wiped down with the solution once a week.

5. In the weight training room, each student athlete is to wipe down each piece of equipment he/she uses with the provided disinfectant solution before moving to another piece of equipment. Paper towels are provided and should be discarded at the conclusion of each person’s session in the weight room.

6. Coaches have been notified about the symptoms and about the dangers of students sharing equipment.

In our continual effort to serve CCS families, we want you to know the precautions we are taking to address this health issue. If your child has the symptoms of MRSA, please contact your physician and let the school know right away.

For more information regarding symptoms, you may check the website of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta www.choa.org. Scroll to the bottom of the home page and there is a link that says “Preventing the Spread of MRSA”.

New Requirements for Vaccines - Everyone Read!

In an effort to reduce childhood preventable diseases in the
state of Georgia, the Georgia Department of Human Resources has approved additions to school-required vaccinations effective July 1, 2007.

The new vaccine requirements include the following:

  • A 2nd dose of varicella (chickenpox) vaccine and a
2nd dose of mumps vaccine or lab proof of immunity
for children entering K-5 and 6th grade, and for students entering a Georgia school for the first time.
  • If your child is under 5 years of age, he or she will need
    a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine.

Your upcoming K-5 or upcoming 6th grade student will need to submit to the school a new Georgia Certificate of Immunization
to reflect these new vaccines.

Any student (no matter what the age) will be required to meet
the new immunization requirement when the certificate of immunizations expires.

If you have any questions, please call or email Peggy Bryson
in the school nurse's office if you have any health concerns,
ext. 214

Keeping CCS Children Well During Flu Season

As the flu season fast approaches, we want to remind families of information that may help all of us stay healthier...

We are staying in close contact with the Muscogee County Health Department for any implementation of crisis management if we were to experience a pandemic influenza outbreak.

While vaccines and anti-viral medications are part of implementing a pandemic response, hygiene instructions and habits are of utmost importance!

Please Remind Your Children To . . .

  • Wash their hands frequently with soap and water
  • Cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze
  • Do not drink after each other
  • Stay home when they are sick

Attention Parents!

Please remember to keep your child home if they have vomited, had diarrhea, or have a temperature higher than 99.6. They need to have been without the above symptoms for 24 hours before returning to school.

Also, CSC is recommending seasonal flu shots for all children 6 months to 5-years old.
