CCS Sets Record for Collecting Pop Tabs for Charity

Calvary Christian School came in 3rd place this year for the most "pop tabs" turned in of all of the area schools - public, private and homeschool - that participated in collecting pop tabs to donate to the Ronald McDonald House to help pay expenses.

Our total was 191 pounds of Pop Tabs!

Last year we finished 5th place with 161 pounds. The year before, we collected 121 pounds.

"I’m thrilled that we keep collecting more and more each year," said CCS's Alisha Fowler who was in charge of the program at CCS. "Thanks to everyone who collected and turned in their pop tabs all year. Now start collecting for next year!"

South African Students Visit CCS Campus

Calvary Christian School hosted five high school students from South Africa April 14 - 18. These students were in the United States to attend an ACSI Leadership Conference being held in Orlando, Florida. The entire group that landed at Hartsfield Jackson International consisted of 25 students from Doxa Deo School in Pretoria, South Africa, which is about 35 miles from Johannesburg.

The students arrived a week early to spend time in local Christian schools around the state as a cultural experience. One highlight that impressed each of the students in Columbus was the “southern hospitality” that was been shown by students, teachers, and host families alike. The South African students expressed their surprise at how quickly and easily close friendships developed. They spoke in elementary, middle, and high school classes throughout the week.

The students also had the opportunity to visit many sites around the area such as the Riverwalk, Columbus Museum, Callaway Gardens, lots of shopping, and dining out. In addition, they were our guests at the CCS Junior/Senior Banquet.

Each of the students said they loved Columbus and wanted to stay longer. They left with many email addresses and plans to stay in touch. The visit was a very positive experience for all.

CCS Website Exceeds 175,000 Hits!

Hits on the CCS website have exceeded 175,000 since its launch in January 2005. It has become a great resource, not only for the CCS family but to prospective CCS families as well. The school has received a significant number information requests from all over the country and many from military families overseas from parents who have found the website.

There has been much positive feedback from CCS students, staff and parents regarding the website. Everyone seems to like being able to go to one central location to find out what is going on on campus. The site includes plenty of news about the school, as well as current information about CCS-related events.

Website developer and CCS webmaster Tracy Stephens does a great job keeping the site updated, and adds new information on a daily basis, so be sure to check it often for the latest news and information. If you do not know about something going on on campus, ask yourself, "Have I checked the school website?"

If you have photos of events (especially sports events) you would like submit to be considered for publication on the site, or have an idea for a feature, please email Tracy Stephens at webmaster@ calvaryknights.com.

Recently I was asked about how and why my husband and I chose to commit to Calvary for the long term. My daughter Brooke started at Calvary last year in Ms. Shiver’s K3 class. She took an immediate liking to school and her teacher. As the year moved along, we wondered, “How we could keep paying for Brooke to attend Calvary Christian?” I remember Ms. Shiver telling me that God provides and we would find a way.

At the time we were looking for a home to buy and thought maybe we could move into a good school district. At the same time, we were really upset at the thought of Brooke not attending the school we had all fallen in love with. Brooke was growing both academically and spiritually…it was wonderful to watch. The day that changed everything was back in February 2007.

Glen Schultz, author of Kingdom Education gave a speech at the Parent Meeting about raising our children to be able to fight evil and that required sacrifice. Part of that sacrifice meant giving our children a Christian education. I left that meeting telling my husband I didn’t care if I had to sell my right arm and live off bologna sandwiches…we were going to keep Brooke at Calvary. So, we purchased a modest house in a good neighborhood and made other choices in our lives. I won’t say it’s always easy, but the sacrifice has been worth it. We recently re-enrolled for K5 and I hope you do too!

God Bless!

Memorial Ceremony in Honor of Linda Carr
New Flag Pole Dedication

CCS students, faculty, parents and friends are invited to attend a special dedication program on Friday, February 1, at 1:30 pm, honoring the life of Linda Carr. Linda's family and friends will be in attendence at the ceremony where the new flagpole in front of the preschool playground and a memorial plaque will be dedicated in Linda's memory.

"Linda's service and dedication to the CCS booster club and Calvary athletics was unmatched, and she truly showed her love for Calvary Christian School over and over again," says Mark Walker.

Everyone will meet outside at the new flagpole in front of the preschool playground at 1:30 for the ceremony, then all will go into the Student Center for the Homecoming pep rally where another special memorial will be presented in honor of Mrs. Carr which will be displayed in the Student Center lobby.

No Parking in Greenhouse Parking Lot

Attention: CCS Students, Faculty, Parents, and Friends!

DO NOT park in the new Greenhouse parking lot when you attend athletics events at the athletic field OR AT ANY OTHER TIME. These parking spots are reserved (at all times) for Greenhouse construction workers, residents, caretakers, visitors, and emergency vehicles. Please pass this word along to anyone you see parking in the parking lot who is not supposed to.

If you are unauthorized to park there, it is possible your vehicle will be towed and you will be responsible for any and all fines! Not to mention, you will not be very "well thought of" by school authorities and your peers.

Thank you for observing this courtesy to our Greenhouse families.

Drivers Needed for our New Bus!

CCS has a new bus! It is a 2000 model International/BlueBird federal and state approved school bus. It has 24 seats, diesel engine, automatic transmission, air brakes, and air conditioning! We purchased it from National Bus Sales in Marietta, GA. It has been used only by a child development center in Atlanta.

Now that the bus is on site, we can begin to develop our list of available drivers. Those interested such as parents, grandparents, coaches, etc. should contact our "Transportation Coordinator" Susan Gray , who is the administrative assistant for the middle school. She will be managing bus driver approval, scheduling and information.

To quality to drive for the school for any event, interested drivers should do the following.

1. Contact our Transportation Coordinator Susan Gray by
calling the school, 706-323-0467, ext. 222.

2. Have or make arrangements to secure a Commercial Driver’s
License (CDL) with the following endorsements: air brakes,
    passenger, school bus.

3. Be part of an ongoing random drug and alcohol testing program
through their employer or through the plan that the school has
    established.

It will take a little time to get the necessary drivers approved and/or qualified. Because of the driving portion of the test required, we needed to get the bus here for instruction and practice first. All of the requirements are state and federally mandated. For the safe transportation of students, we will adhere to those requirements very closely.

"Thanks to all of those who contribute to this year’s Annual Fund which made this piece of equipment possible. Without a doubt, it has been demonstrated that the safest way to transport children is in an approved school bus. It is a tremendous encouragement to me to know that the students at Calvary will have that available," says Mr. Mac, CCS Headmaster.

Christian School Comment

A Perspective on Christian School Education
Recommended reading for parents by CCS Headmaster Len McWilliams

Take a moment to read a "Christian School Comment" written by Ken Smitherman, President of ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International).

Title: It Really Is War

"You have made a significant effort and probably a significant sacrifice to enroll your children in a Christian school. You have recognized the importance of integrating faith and learning, an integration that focuses not only on intellectual development but also on the nurture and development of the spiritual from a Biblically based, Christ-centered perspective. These are crucial days for the development and nurture of our children..."

Schultz's Message to CCS Parents Available on DVD

If you missed Author Glen Shultz's outstanding and imperative message about "Parent's Roles in the Team Process" of educating your children at our February parent meeting you can now view it on DVD.

Dr. Glen Schultz is one of the foremost authorities on developing an exceptional Christian school team. He also is an outstanding speaker and author of Kingdom Education, one of the finest works to bring together the dynamics of church and school elements in raising Godly generations.

This is a MUST for ALL Christian parents! You need to hear this message so you can "be equipped" as parents to deal with the educational system in our current culture.

CCS Headmaster Len McWilliams feels that this was such an important message that every parent at CCS should have the opportunity to hear it or hear it again, so he has made the DVD available to you.

Copies are on-hand in each school office (high school, middle school, elementary school, pre-school) that can be "checked-out" for a short time and then returned to that department.

Don't miss this opportunity!
