Summer Reading Requirements for Middle School

The Summer reading program is required for all returning and new students accepted by July 1. Summer reading is an integral part of a college-preparatory program. Having a broad exposure to literary classics will increase your child's vocabulary, knowledge, understanding and appreciation of books of great value.

All CCS middle school students are required to read over the summer per the following guidelines:

Upcoming 6th grade students must read ONE book from the CCS reading list (printable below).

Upcoming 7th and 8th grade students must read TWO books from the CCS reading list.

Students will be responsible for assignments related to summer reading during the first two weeks of school. The two book responses will equal one test grade. Middle School students have the option of writing a book report for each book read or taking the Accelerated Reader test on the book or books read. The tests and/or book reports are due by the end of the first full week of school.

The CCS Library/Media Center will be open on Wednesdays,
9:00 am - 12:00 noon
during the summer.

Summer Bible Assignment for Middle School

As a supportive measure in helping to eliminate the possibility of any type of "bullying" behavoir on our campus, CCS is requiring a Summer Bible assignment for all middle school students registered for the 2010-11 school year.

Elements of the assignment include reading, studying, memorization and writing an essay on the subject matter. The scripture memorization and the essay are due on the first day of school, August 13, 2010.

Middle School "Service Hours" Requirement

All middle school students are required to participate in service hours during the school year.

Students earn hours by selecting from a number of opportunities, a list of which will be made available the first day of the new school year. The requirements per grade are:

 6th grade
- 4 hours for the year
2 hours due by mid-December, 2 hours due in May
 7th grade
- 6 hours for the year
3 hours due by mid-December, 3 hours due in May
8th grade - 8 hours for the year
4 hours due by mid-December, 4 hours due in May

Summer Service Hours?

Students may earn their hours during the SUMMER which can
be counted for both semesters, however, they would need to complete an oral presentation the 1st semester and a written presentation for the second semester. Hours earned helping in Vacation Bible School and youth missions trips will count to fulfull the service hours requirement. Students are encouraged to volunteer during the summer to alleviate the stress of completing the required hours during the school year.

CCS Middle School Students Care . . .
"Calvary Cares" Day

CCS 6th grade students participated in community service as part of the recent "Calvary Cares" day. The students were divided into two groups.

The first group visited Hamilton House Nursing Home where they met with residents, played games and exercised with them. The girls painted ladies' fingernails and the boys performed an impromptu song for the residents. The visit put smiles on their faces and meant alot to the men and women of Hamilton House.

The second group went to Open Door Mission where they organized the clothes closet and assembled hygiene kits to be distributed to people who come to the mission.

8th grade students did work at the Gardens of Calvary, Hopegivers International, and visited residents of Vista Care at Franciscian Woods. Unfortunately, the 7th grade's project
got rained out that day,

CCS Middle School Honors Choir

Congratulations to CCS middle school students who were selected to participate in the Middle School Honors Choir.

Students rehearsed their music prior to a weekend clinic and concert held at Hardaway High School in Columbus. The guest clinician for the weekend workshop was Dr. Elizabeth Parker of the Schwob School of Music, Columbus State University. The middle school "all-select" chorus had well over 400 middle school choir members from Muscogee County and surrounding areas. This was a great honor for our students to be selected to participate in this event.

See who made 2nd quarter's Principal's List and A/B Honor Roll. Students on the Principal's List achieved all A's in all subjects on their report cards. The A/B Honor Roll is a list of students who made all A's and B's on their report cards.
