CCS Essay by Emily Mabry Wins Competition

Recently, an essay contest was held in Mrs. Ahlman's AP English class for possible publication to the Columbus newspaper, Northland Neighbor. The students were instructed by Marketing Coordinator, Krista Pettry to write an essay about what makes Calvary Christian School different from other schools.

The winner, CCS Senior Emily Mabry, was chosen because her essay best communicated that the faculty and staff at Calvary Christian School have prepared her for success both in her academic endeavors and in life.

If you are a parent who is looking for a private school for your child, this essay should help you to see exactly what our school is all about.

If you are a current parent or student of CCS, I hope this essay will solidify in your mind what you already know about our wonderful school.

CCS Spanish Club Buys a Goat - No, TWO Goats!
...and some chickens too!

Instead of a holiday food drive this year, the High School Spanish Club decided to buy a goat from the Samaritan's Purse
Gift Catalog this Christmas. Our slogan was, "You Buy the Nachos, We'll Buy the Goat!!"

At break time on two Fridays, students collected donations and sold enough nachos to make $161 in 1/2 hour.

"We're grateful for the support of students, faculty and parents which allowed us to buy 2 goats, 12 chickens, and a soccer ball for needy families abroad! It was a fun event and hopefully will make a family's Navidad more Feliz!!!"

"Youth Leadership Columbus" Selects CCS Students

Each year local high school juniors who exhibit leadership skills or the potential for leadership are given the opportunity to apply for the Youth Leadership Columbus Scholarship Program. Students chosen for this honor commit to a year-long training program that includes skill building in areas such as setting goals, making decisions and managing conflict.

This year Youth Leadership Columbus chose more students from CCS than any other high school in Columbus! Congrats to the following CCS juniors who were selected for this honor:

Megan Eldridge, Sarah Grigg, Kristina Hodge, Matt Luke, Caitlyn Merritt, Jay Morris, Kendall Morris, and Neil Tipton.

They will be honored at a reception at CB&T on October 22.

Senior Trip '09!

Thirty-five seniors and chaperones traveled to Boston for 2 days and then on to New York City for 3 days on this year's senior trip.

In Boston, we took an amphibian truck tour of the harbor, went whale watching, ate at Cheers (from the tv show), and enjoyed the Freedom Trail tour of colonial sites (Paul Revere, etc). We spent an interesting afternoon and Harvard University with former CCS valedictorian John Coleman who is currently earning two degrees from Harvard's business school. John is already a published co-author of the book, How to Argue Like Jesus.

In New York City, among other sites, we toured Ellis Island, Ground Zero, Times Square, Central Park, the Empire State Building, and attended either a baseball game or "Phantom of the Opera" in the theatre district. One especially enjoyable highlight was an evening in China Town dining and shopping. On a Sunday morning we served at Redeemer Presbyterian Church, a large city church with a myriad of ministries as volunteers in the children's Sunday School department.

The whole trip was a blast! We had such a good time that the students said they should plan a 10-year high school reunion in New York City!!
