Choirs Receive Superior Ratings from GMEA

Congratulations to the high school and middle school choirs who recently participated in the GMEA Music Festival held at First Baptist Church in Columbus. Directed by Choral Director Chris Waterstraat, both groups scored "superior" ratings from the judges for both performance and sight-reading. This is the highest score possible. "This is really a wonderful accomplishment for them, considering the difficulties they have had this year," said
former CCS Choral Director Judy Meeks who is now in Arkansas. "Chris Waterstraat did an excellent job as their director, especially since it was his first time to take any groups to an evaluation."

"We are very proud of the students and appreciate Mr. Waterstraat's hard work," commented Angie Bacon of the elementary music department.

Father and Son Collect Over 20 lbs of Pop Tabs!

CCS Sophomore Ryan Tait and his father, Bruce Tait, have been collecting pop tabs for a very long time. They started collecting them when Ryan was in the 2nd grade. Nine years later they had collected a whopping total of over 20 pounds of pop tabs! CCS commends the Taits for their efforts in making a difference in the community.

CCS students are also collecting pop tabs all year to benefit our local Ronald McDonald House. Please remember to save your tabs and bring them to the school often. Collections points are located in each school office.

Thank you for your support.

CCS Student Receives "Youth Volunteer" Award

Amanda Downey, a junior volunteer at St. Francis Hospital, recently received the "Youth Volunteer Award" from the Tri-Community Directors of Volunteers Services.

The CCS senior has been a junior volunteer at the hospital for four years accumulating 373 hours during the summer volunteer program, as well as additional hours throughout the school year. During this time she has served in the surgery department and in the pre-operative and post-operative care departments. Author Writes Letter to CCS English Students

The Sophomore English class recently read Epic by John Eldredge, a small volume that compares the epic stories of literature to the Great Story of Salvation. In addition, the students began to relate their own lives as stories within the Great Story. After many edits and revisions, the students mailed individual letters to the author to share with him their responses to the book.

The students were honored to receive a response to their letters by John Eldredge. He writes:

"Hey Gang. Wow! Thanks for your letters in response to Epic. That is really cool. I love them! Perhaps the best way we can live in God's story from day to day is to think "mythically" about our own lives. Remember, the stories you love and the characters that speak to you are telling you something about your true identity and your role in this Epic! Much Thanks. John Eldredge."

John Eldredge is Director of Ransomed Heart Ministries and author of books such as Wild at Heart, Sacred Romance, Waking the Dead, as well as Epic.

Congratulations to Leah Blackmon who took first place in the "argumentative essay" event at the GISA Region 4AA Literary Arts and Music Competition. Students were given a choice from five essay topics to write about within a 2-hour period. Leah chose the the following topic:

"The recent West Virginia mine disaster has focused a great amount of attention on the extent to which miscommunication was made worse by the media presence and the desire of those in the media to get a story. In the event of future crises of this sort, what should be the media's role so as not to hinder any sort of rescue effort?"
