CCS Seniors Experience The Renaissance
Seniors will dress in costume and perform at RenFest.

The senior class gathered at Medieval Times Restaurant in Discover Mills Mall in Lawrenceville, GA, to step back into time. They consumed "little dragons" (roast chicken) and other tasty morsels, eating with our hands as they listened to seminar on the history and culture of the medieval times. Then came the show!

In a large arena, they saw the king's falcon circling overhead and watched the six knights in their colors parade on their horses led by the squires. They joined the king's feast as he celebrated a tournament. In spite of a betrayer among the knights, in the following battle, the king's knights were victorious!

The seniors, accompanied by Mrs. Ahlman, Teri Sizemore, and Bob Schifflet, had a wonderful experience. Now it is time for their own Renaissance. The seniors will dress in costume and provide entertainment at the CCS Annual Renaissance Festival on Friday, March 2,5 between 5:30 and 7:30 pm. Come and join us!

CCS Essay by Emily Mabry Wins Competition

Recently, an essay contest was held in Mrs. Ahlman's AP English class for possible publication to the Columbus newspaper, Northland Neighbor. The students were instructed by Marketing Coordinator, Krista Pettry to write an essay about what makes Calvary Christian School different from other schools.

The winner, CCS Senior Emily Mabry, was chosen because her essay best communicated that the faculty and staff at Calvary Christian School have prepared her for success both in her academic endeavors and in life.

If you are a parent who is looking for a private school for your child, this essay should help you to see exactly what our school is all about.

If you are a current parent or student of CCS, I hope this essay will solidify in your mind what you already know about our wonderful school.

Senior Trip '09!

Thirty-five seniors and chaperones traveled to Boston for 2 days and then on to New York City for 3 days on this year's senior trip.

In Boston, we took an amphibian truck tour of the harbor, went whale watching, ate at Cheers (from the tv show), and enjoyed the Freedom Trail tour of colonial sites (Paul Revere, etc). We spent an interesting afternoon and Harvard University with former CCS valedictorian John Coleman who is currently earning two degrees from Harvard's business school. John is already a published co-author of the book, How to Argue Like Jesus.

In New York City, among other sites, we toured Ellis Island, Ground Zero, Times Square, Central Park, the Empire State Building, and attended either a baseball game or "Phantom of the Opera" in the theatre district. One especially enjoyable highlight was an evening in China Town dining and shopping. On a Sunday morning we served at Redeemer Presbyterian Church, a large city church with a myriad of ministries as volunteers in the children's Sunday School department.

The whole trip was a blast! We had such a good time that the students said they should plan a 10-year high school reunion in New York City!!

Choirs Receive Superior Ratings from GMEA

Congratulations to the high school and middle school choirs who recently participated in the GMEA Music Festival held at First Baptist Church in Columbus. Directed by Choral Director Chris Waterstraat, both groups scored "superior" ratings from the judges for both performance and sight-reading. This is the highest score possible. "This is really a wonderful accomplishment for them, considering the difficulties they have had this year," said
former CCS Choral Director Judy Meeks who is now in Arkansas. "Chris Waterstraat did an excellent job as their director, especially since it was his first time to take any groups to an evaluation."

"We are very proud of the students and appreciate Mr. Waterstraat's hard work," commented Angie Bacon of the elementary music department.

Father and Son Collect Over 20 lbs of Pop Tabs!

CCS Sophomore Ryan Tait and his father, Bruce Tait, have been collecting pop tabs for a very long time. They started collecting them when Ryan was in the 2nd grade. Nine years later they had collected a whopping total of over 20 pounds of pop tabs! CCS commends the Taits for their efforts in making a difference in the community.

CCS students are also collecting pop tabs all year to benefit our local Ronald McDonald House. Please remember to save your tabs and bring them to the school often. Collections points are located in each school office.

Thank you for your support.

CCS Student Receives "Youth Volunteer" Award

Amanda Downey, a junior volunteer at St. Francis Hospital, recently received the "Youth Volunteer Award" from the Tri-Community Directors of Volunteers Services.

The CCS senior has been a junior volunteer at the hospital for four years accumulating 373 hours during the summer volunteer program, as well as additional hours throughout the school year. During this time she has served in the surgery department and in the pre-operative and post-operative care departments. She has also served as a transporter (moving patients) and at the hospital's information desk. Amanda plans to enroll in the nursing program at Columbus State University this Fall. Amanda also has volunteered at her church, in nursing homes, and the annual Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens.

All CCS students are encouraged and required to give some of their time each school year to community Christian service. It is our hope that students will even exceed the required number of hours. Amanda should be highly commended for going far beyond!

Author Writes Letter to CCS English Students

The Sophomore English class recently read Epic by John Eldredge, a small volume that compares the epic stories of literature to the Great Story of Salvation. In addition, the students began to relate their own lives as stories within the Great Story. After many edits and revisions, the students mailed individual letters to the author to share with him their responses to the book.

The students were honored to receive a response to their letters by John Eldredge. He writes:

"Hey Gang. Wow! Thanks for your letters in response to Epic. That is really cool. I love them! Perhaps the best way we can live in God's story from day to day is to think "mythically" about our own lives. Remember, the stories you love and the characters that speak to you are telling you something about your true identity and your role in this Epic! Much Thanks. John Eldredge."

John Eldredge is Director of Ransomed Heart Ministries and author of books such as Wild at Heart, Sacred Romance, Waking the Dead, as well as Epic.

Congratulations to Leah Blackmon who took first place in the "argumentative essay" event at the GISA Region 4AA Literary Arts and Music Competition. Students were given a choice from five essay topics to write about within a 2-hour period. Leah chose the the following topic:

"The recent West Virginia mine disaster has focused a great amount of attention on the extent to which miscommunication was made worse by the media presence and the desire of those in the media to get a story. In the event of future crises of this sort, what should be the media's role so as not to hinder any sort of rescue effort?"
